On this day 73 years ago, in 1949, Konrad Adenauer was elected the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the course of rebuilding Germany’s democratic structures, he participated in drafting the Basic Law, among other things, and strengthened reconciliation with France. He was in office for a total of 14 years.
