Information about the Semester Ticket
The regional Semester Ticket
The semester ticket entitles the holder to any number of trips on all bus and train lines within the tariff area of the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV). This also includes the cross-border lines to Vaals (lines 25 and 33), Kelmis (line 24) and Kerkrade (line 34).
The Semester Ticket NRW
In addition, the Semester Ticket NRW entitles the holder to use the RE/ RB/ S trains, buses, trams, city and underground trains throughout NRW, which may be travelled on with regional transport association tickets, with the exception of the sections Bad Laasphe – Marburg (Lahn), Rudersdorf (Siegen) – Haiger, Rudersdorf (Siegen) – Warburg (Westf), Niederdresselndorf – Haiger.
The ticket is not transferable and does not entitle the holder to take along additional persons or bicycles free of charge (exception: the free transportation of children in accordance with the tariff regulations of the transport associations). The SemesterTicket NRW is only valid in conjunction with the regional SemesterTicket.
For journeys with Deutsche Bahn AG that go beyond the area of validity, a connecting ticket can be purchased from DB in accordance with the general DB tariff.
However, if the further route is completely within a transport association, this is not always possible in the transport association at the ticket machine and is difficult at the ticket office of other stations. A connecting ticket according to the DB tariff is often refused there on the grounds that it is “within a transport association”. Since the train conductors on the trains no longer sell tickets, the connecting ticket according to the DB tariff must be purchased before the journey begins in Aachen. The same procedure is recommended for the return journey to Aachen. It is best to buy a connecting ticket at the DB tariff when you arrive in Aachen.
Of course you can also buy a ticket for the additional journey at the station when changing trains or on your return journey. However, please remember to do so before you start your journey. Composite tickets are neither sold on trains nor can they be purchased there. The ticket must be valid from the last station in the “base” area. Therefore, you cannot use the semester ticket to travel beyond the limits of the area of validity.
Within the AVV area, the ticket is valid; only the BlueCard is required for identification. For the rest of NRW, the ticket must be presented together with an official photo ID or international student ID. The ticket is valid for the entire semester – even during the semester break.
Attention first semester students:
The ticket is not valid until the official start of the semester, i.e. October 1 or April 1. Please take this into account if you are already travelling to or in Aachen, e.g. to visit the preliminary courses. For everything before the beginning of the semester you have to buy single tickets or time passes at the ASEAG.
Important: The tickets must not be welded or laminated, so that you can check them “in the original” during an inspection.
If the pass is lost the ASEAG service point will issue a new pass for a fee.
When will I get my money?
The processing time is 2-3 weeks. Applications for the coming semester can only be paid at the beginning of the following semester.
I have lost or not received my ticket. How do I get a new one?
The ASEAG Service Center will issue a new semester ticket upon presentation of your matriculation certificate, Bluecard and passport.
I will start studying next semester. Can I already use my ticket for the preliminary course?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. The ticket is only valid with the official start of the semester from 01.10. or 01.04. However, with a certificate of participation in the preliminary course, a monthly ticket can be purchased at a special rate from the AStA.
Does the ticket include any additional offers (free transportation of the bicycle or additional persons at certain times or similar)?
Since the summer semester of 2014, there have been no additional offerings.
Why is the semester ticket only valid together with an official photo ID or an international student ID?
Since the semester ticket is not transferable, it must be possible to establish your identity by means of an ID with a passport photo. In the AVV, the BlueCard is sufficient for identification.
I cannot submit a certificate of my semester abroad/internship/diploma thesis etc. by the application deadline, can I still apply?
Please make a request and upload a document at the same time stating that you will submit the documents later (you need to upload a document in order to make a request). At the same time, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org stating that your documents will arrive later and indicating the order number.
I will be abroad/away from Aachen for a total of 6 months due to an internship, but 3 months of that will be in the summer semester and 3 months in the winter semester. Can I still get the mobility fee reimbursed?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. The minimum absence of four months must be within one semester. This limit has been contractually agreed upon with the AVV and has been incorporated into the regulations of the student body. This period of four months is already a compromise, as originally the transport companies had planned an absence for the whole semester. In awareness of the fact that semesters abroad, internships, etc. are rarely congruent with the official semester times and various overlaps are possible, the minimum period of four months within a semester was specified. All other cases in which the ticket can still be used in part, even if not for the entire semester, are therefore no longer covered by the hardship clause.
What do I have to do if I want to take my bike on local transport?
For the bicycle transport you need an appropriate additional ticket for the network in which you are traveling. In some transport associations, there are blackout periods for the transport of bicycles. In the AVV, bicycles can only be taken along if the bus driver gives his “OK”. If you are planning to travel by bike throughout NRW, we recommend the FahrradTicket NRW from DB.
When can I come for counseling?
Thursday from 2 – 4 pm at the AStA of the RWTH.
Can I get my ticket back if I have already been granted a refund?
Yes, sign up for it at email@example.com
